Personal Success Definition

I define success as someone who creates amazing things for the world.

Rob Trujillo is successful by my definition because he creates music that people around the world listen to and enjoy.

Skills for Success

Rob Trujillo is a 1) very good bassist, 2) songwriter and 3) team player. Rob has been interested in music ever since he found out that his mom really like to listen to Motown and bands like that. He said that Jaco Pastorius was his hero growing up and that he changed his view on what instrument he wanted to play. “Hearing him was like hearing Eddie Van Halen doing “Eruption” for the first time: You thought, ‘What instrument is that?”– Wikipedia. He went to Jazz school when he was 19 with the goal of wanting to be a studio musician, but he kept his passion for rock and metal.

How They Used These Skills

During the audition with Metallica, Kirk Hammett, the lead guitarist for Metallica said “You make us sound so much better, so solid. You’re the chosen one” – ultimateclassicrock.com. He then went on to write and play some of Metallica’s most popular songs and even make a ‘Doodle’ with Kirk. He works really well with the other members of the band and a valued member to many.

Rob and Kirk decided to perform what they call a doodle at concerts, which is where they cover a song that a local artist has done because when they toured in Europe a while ago, they weren’t getting the crowd exciting enough so one night Kirk started playing Le Freak, by Chic and Rob started playing along. It had the effect they wanted so they kept doing it, but with different songs.

Challenges Overcome

One of the biggest challenges that Rob ever faced was the first interview with Metallica. He had spent the night before getting drunk with the drummer of Metallica, Lars Ulrich, and had a massive hangover. “Here I am with a pounding headache. James has just gone through this whole thing where, of course, he’s sober, and the last person he wants to see anywhere near his band is a drunk Mexican. That would be me. […] I was throwing water on my face, slapping it, going, ‘Oh, man, you’ve gotta… Hang in there. Hang in there.’ Cause I really wanted to say, ‘I can’t do this right now, guys. I don’t feel good. I really can’t do this.” ultimateclassicrock.com.
